My history with playing games fast

Roots

I have challenged myself to beat games as quickly as I can for as long as I can remember.

When I was little, my mum would work on the weekends. This left me either being babysat by somebody, or being taken along to work with her.

I never had much to do except play my Game Boy, so I would challenge myself to see how many times in a row I could beat a game.

One of those games was Spider-Man 2: The Sinister Six. I vividly remember beating it six times in a row one day and being so proud of myself

This is where it all started for little me.

Discovering the community

I first found out about the actual speedrunning community through AGDQ 2013.

I joined the stream midway through CarlSagan's Yoshi's Island run and got hooked immediately. Everyone in the room was popping off over the swag strats he was doing, and I thought it was sick as shit.

Offline meanderings (2013)

I was keen to get started speedrunning right away. Unfortunately for me my laptop was busted and I wasn't able to do so.

In the prevaling months after AGDQ was over, I spent a lot of time doing ILs in Trials HD, specifically the Skill Games.

At the time of writing 12 years later, this is still the WR on this level!

Fired up

Now it's 2014 and AGDQ is starting back up again.

I see this based flippy haired guy named "cyghfer" play a super technical run of Bucky O'Hare - and balls-hard category called HARD! Mode to boot.

I wanted to be just like him and master something like that too.

I set to work practicing the game on Wii VC, as that was the only way I could play at the time. I spent weeks practicing each Planet in the game one by one.

Streaming (2014)

I finally got my laptop fixed by August, which allowed me to finally be able to stream.

August 28th 2014 I broadcast my 1st Bucky O'Hare speedruns.

I played Normal Mode initially, with my goal to beat the time the HARD! Mode WR got before moving over.

After accomplishing that, I moved on to HARD! Mode. This is where my PB/WR stands as of Jan 2016

I achieved my dream of being just like Cyghfer.

Monkey Ballin'

I grew up playing Super Monkey Ball 2 as a kid.

I ended up doing some runs of Story Mode too offline in 2014, alongside my Bucky practice, but nothing ever too serious.

I was pretty set on only running NES games, but I was saving up to buy a version of the system from abroad that was good for speedrunning.

I thought I'd give Super Monkey Ball 1 a try

This is where my PB/WR stands today.

The 1st and only person to ever get a sub-15 in Master.

Definitely one of my best speedruns ever.

TASing

I was always curious about TASing, but it mystified me.

In 2021 I decided it was finally time to give it a go. I chose the ultra-obscure puzzle game Delta Warp for the NGPC.

I had a blast setting my mind to something so different like this and following through to the end product you see here.

I went on to create various other TASes, with this run of Shounen Ashibe being the most entertaining.

It even earned the 'Moons' categorisation on TASvideos!

Full circle (2021)

During covid times, Games Done Quick opened up submissions to a global audience by accepting remote runs.

I decided to submit one game, one time, and never again.

It got in.

This shit stressed me out, but I am really proud of this run and is one of the defining moments of my time in Speedrunning

Kororinpa is actually my favourite game to speedrun of all-time. I love how fluid and 1-to-1 the controls are in this game. It really is such a joy to play.

Ballin' part 2 (Modern-day 2021 ~ 2025)

I finally returned to my speedrun and childhood gaming roots by picking up Super Monkey Ball 2 again.

The journey to becoming a top-level player was long and arduous.

After YEARS of slaving away on and off, I managed to achieve these runs, easily my 2 greatest speedrunning accomplishments of all-time.
